What is Botox?
Botox is a simple, nonsurgical in-office treatment. It is injected directly into the facial muscles which block the nerve impulses to the injected muscles causing a reduction in muscle activity, thus reducing fine lines. This helps decrease fine lines around the eyes (crow’s feet) and frown lines between the eyes. It can also help with lines on the forehead.
Botox is FDA approved as a wrinkle relaxer in the forehead and eye areas. It is also used for control of migraine headaches and as a treatment for excessive sweating.
How Does Botox Work to Relax Wrinkles?
Botox is placed in the muscles that control facial movements. For example, the muscles in the upper part of the forehead control the “frown line” muscles between the eyebrows. Botox causes partial paralysis of these muscles, which means that the facial expressions forming wrinkles can’t be made as easily anymore.
What Are the Best Areas For Botox?
The most popular area for Botox is the forehead area. There are 2 main kinds of wrinkles that develop in the forehead: The horizontal lines above the brows and the vertical lines between the brows. Both sets of lines can be significantly reduced with Botox injections. Another common area for Botox is the crow’s feet, the lines that form at the corners of the eyes when laughing or smiling. Botox may sometimes be used to slightly lift the eyebrows, or even to lift the corners of a drooping mouth in some cases. Some patients have Botox injected into the neck bands, as well.
How Long Will Botox Treatment Last?
Botox usually lasts around 3 to 4 months in most people. When Botox is administered by an experienced physician like Dr. Kujok, you will not lose the ability to show expressions. Patients who want to extend the life of their Botox should have regular treatments before all the product has dissipated. Some patients are able to stretch the time between treatments to 6 months or longer. Dr. Kujok will help each patient determine which treatment schedule will keep them looking youthful and beautiful all the time.
