Stretch marks can occur during any stage of life and for a variety of reasons. While some may fade, especially if brought on by pregnancy, some stretch marks become permanent and look very similar to scars occurring in the skin. These marks, due to expansion in the skin and tears within the dermis, often are accompanied with color change.
While there are tips to prevent stretch marks and an array of topical creams that may help improve the appearance, laser technology has become the preferred and most effective method that physicians recommend to patients to improve the appearance of stretch marks.
At Elegance MD Aesthetic Center, our Cynosure 1540 laser is the first and only FDA cleared laser to treat stretch marks. The laser works by delivering fractionated pulses of light to your area of concern causing micro-injuries, which kickstart your body’s natural healing response to stimulate the production of collagen. As collagen forms and your skin begins to repair itself, visible signs of the stretch mark are improved over a period of weeks to months.
While stretch mark treatment with laser resurfacing (hyperlink to laser resurfacing page) works on a variety of skin types, it may not be an appropriate treatment for everyone. Dr. Kujok will do an assessment to determine if laser resurfacing to treat your stretch mark is the appropriate course of action.
While there is no downtime, you may experience a little redness, minor swelling and sensitivity in the area treated for a few days following treatment. We recommend at least four treatments performed three to four weeks apart to increase the percentage of improvement.
